Hardy Wins Medals
Lexington resident Ken Hardy earned three medals at the National Veterans Golden Age Games held May 22-24 in Des Moines, Iowa. Hardy’s best event was the long jump, which he won with a leap of 11 feet, 1 inch, setting a record for his age group. Hardy, 75, earned silver medals in both the 50-meter backstroke and the 50-meter sprint and placed sixth in the 1500-meter race walk. The NVGAG is an annual, national competition open to U.S. military veterans over the age of 55. Next year, the NVGAG will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Celebrating Juneteenth In Glasgow
Glasgow residents celebrated Juneteenth this past Friday and Saturday, at the James E. Thompson Sr. Community Center. Events kicked off on Friday evening with a Rockbridge Historical Society presentation and showing of the film “Green Book.” As part of the opening ceremonies on Saturday afternoon, a parade of community members carrying Pan-African flags processed into the old auditorium of the former Glasgow School. AT TOP LEFT, Keshia Harwill, her 9-monthold daughter Aylah and Dontae Kelly enter the auditorium. MIDDLE ROW LEFT, Deacon Larry Hartwill of Union Baptist Church, who gave the prayer at the beginning of the celebration Saturday, shares a laugh with Jerry Thompson, son of James Thompson Sr. MIDDLE ROW CENTER, Mayor Paul Williams addresses the crowd. MIDDLE ROW RIGHT, Morgan Kelly reads from a speech by Martin Luther King Jr. AT LEFT, free concessions were available from the school’s old cafeteria. (Joann Ware photos)

Glasgow
Wow, what a storm that rolled into town on Friday afternoon! Wind, rain and hail, downed trees, or tree limbs, moved outbuildings and even the porta-john at the Farmers Market moved about 4 feet. Most of the damage was located on Kanawha and Virginia streets and down towards the river. I only heard of one household being without power for awhile, which is amazing. I didn’t hear of any injuries due to the downed trees. The Randy Smith home on Virginia Street had a tree fall on part of his place. Members of the fire department went door to door checking on folks.

Surprise Visitors
On Thursday, June 15, children at St. Patrick Catholic Church’s vacation Bible achool, “Stellar,” welcomed two visitors, Luna, a Fainting Goat, and Blueberry Cream, a LaMancha goat, courtesy of parishioners Val Lund and Fritz Fleming. They were the week’s surprise “God Sightings,” illustrating that all creatures, great and small, reflect the goodness and the light of the Lord. (Kathleen Nowacki-Correia photo)

Carnival Nights In Raphine
The weather was perfect and the crowds were large for the annual Raphine Volunteer Fire Department’s annual carnival last week. There were plenty of rides, games, music and food, including barbecue chicken dinners on Friday and Saturday evenings. Helping to serve the chicken dinners was (in photo at bottom right, in foreground) Gertrude Shull. Among those playing the dime toss game (in photo at bottom left) was Kayden Ruley.
