David W. Smith, 89, of Lexington died Saturday, May 6, at Havenwood Assisted Living in Lexington.

David W. Smith, 89, of Lexington died Saturday, May 6, at Havenwood Assisted Living in Lexington. He was born Aug. 24, 1933, in Niagara Falls, N.Y. David grew up and lived much of his adult life in Wilson, New York; he had been a resident of Lexington since 1999. David was predeceased by his brother, Gavin Smith; sister, Thelma Clift; and grandson, Mathew Smith. He is survived by his wife, Diane M. Smith; and children Debbie (Deborah), David (Martha), Daniel (Paula), Paul Keefer, Thomas Keefer (Valerie) and Timothy Keefer (Connie Lum); four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. David’s working life was spent in the fields of electrical and electronic engineering, computer programming and computer-directed manufacturing. He was a talented wood carver and woodworker, creator of beautiful furniture and carved animals. All of his life, he was a singer: in church choirs, community choruses, small groups and solos. A high point was his leading role as Professor Harold Hill in a Wilson, N.Y., community-theater production of “The Music Man.” He had a deep, abiding faith in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His keen intelligence, sparkling wit, ready smile, kindness, love, and joy in living will be remembered and cherished by his family and friends. Memorial and graveside services will take place on a date to be announced. David will be interred in Greenwood Cemetery, Wilson, New York.
