Fire and rescue crews were dispatched last Thursday night at 10:22 for a crash involving two tractor-trailers that caught fire at mile marker 202.9 northbound on Interstate 81. One driver was flown to a trauma center with serious injuries. One of the two trucks, a FedEx truck, was carrying hazardous materials and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management hazardous materials officer responded to assist with mitigation efforts. Agencies from South River Fire, Fairfield Rescue Squad, Raphine Fire, Rockbridge Baths Fire, Rockbridge County Fire-Rescue and Lexington Rescue responded and worked in a unified command with the VDEM, the Department of Environmental Quality, VDOT, state police, Lee Hi Towing and Cedar Hill Farms Environmental to ensure a proper clean-up and recovery of the material and trucks, according to Nathan Ramsey, Rockbridge County fire-rescue chief.
