Biking On The Fourth
Jimmy Southers’ patriotic 1953 tow truck helped lead the way for the 38th annual Children’s Bike Parade in downtown Lexington on the Fourth of July. Once again, hundreds of children, family members – and dogs – headed down Main Street on their way to the W&L corral parking lot for free hot dogs and drinks. (Stephanie Mikels Blevins photos)

Enjoying Freedom Food – After The Rain
Not just one, but two storms, preceded the third Freedom Food Festival in downtown Lexington on July 3. Those setting up for the event, including volunteers at the Natural Bridge State Park/CHEFS Catering booth (above) gathered under the tents, and tried to keep the water from bringing the tents down. After the second storm, though, the skies cleared, tables were cleaned off and thousands descended upon Main Street for the event. Among those serving up food were volunteers in the Southern Inn/Connections Plus Healthcare + Hospice food booth (below left). The first of three musical acts to take the stage that day was Matt Koziol (at right). (Mary Woodson photos)

Recalling Powell’s ‘Masterful Compromise’
Forty-five years ago this summer, a divided U.S. Supreme Court, in a ruling authored by Associate Justice Lewis F. Powell – a distinguished alumnus of Washington and Lee University – held that colleges and universities could consider race as one factor among others in admissions decisions. This was the law of the land until two weeks ago, when the court ruled that race could no longer be considered in determining which students are admitted.

Wham!
According to a recent article in The New York Times, cottage cheese, the lumpy dairy product embraced by my mother’s generation as a necessary component of any reducing diet, is enjoying a bump in popularity. This is due in part to members of the online platform TikTok pairing it with yellow mustard to create a healthy alternative to calorie-laden dips containing either sour cream, cream cheese or both.
