Helping Emma
Local firefighters responded to an unusual call last Saturday – one for a pregnant donkey that had gotten stuck in deep mud at the end of an old pond. According to a Facebook post by the Glasgow Volunteer Fire Department, the department was called by Effinger Fire & EMS and the Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office animal control to assist with getting the donkey, named Emma, out of the mud along the Blacks Creek area pond. “Crews were able to maneuver straps under Emma and secured them in a means to not cause harm to her or her little one, then a mechanical advantage system was utilized to pull and free her from the mud,” according to the post. “Once free and back on solid ground, Emma was able to stand on her own and eventually released back to pasture.” The photo at left shows Emma in the mud and the one above shows her on solid ground.
