It Is Long Past Time for NATO to Admit Ukraine
It Is Long Past Time for NATO to Admit Ukraine
In 1956, Moscow sent tanks and troops into Hungary, killing thousands of protesters as it crushed an anti-Communist uprising. Twelve years later the Soviet Union attacked Czechoslovakia, putting a brutal end to the Prague Spring and its liberal reforms. In 1991, Soviet tanks and armored personnel carriers assaulted crowds of civilians defending the independence of Lithuania. Russia fomented a war against Georgia in 2008, illegally seizing the territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Most murderous of all has been Russia’s savage onslaught against Ukraine, which began in 2014 with the conquest of Crimea and exploded in February 2022 into a full-scale invasion aimed at overthrowing the pro-Western government of Volodymyr Zelensky. 07/26/2023 12:00 AM
Entertainment Aplenty
Entertainment Aplenty
For those who opted out of the “Barbenheimer” theatrical releases this past weekend, there were options for live entertainment available in our midst. Seldom Scene, the progressive bluegrass band that’s been seen plenty at the Lime Kiln Theater over the years, was back at the kiln to provide a rollicking good time for those fortunate enough to have snared tickets to the sold-out show. 07/26/2023 12:00 AM

Support For Peace Corps Act Encouraged
July 14, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: As a returned Peace Corps volunteer who served in Jamaica from 1972 to 1974, I am urging Representative Cline and Senators Warner and Kaine to support the Peace Corps Reauthorization Act (HR 1273/S 1203) which is currently up for approval in Congress. This act will renew funding and provide needed updates to volunteer support services. In 2019, there were over 7,000 volunteers serving; today, post-pandemic, 1,200 volunteers have now returned to 51 countries. Historically, since its founding 62 years ago, 240,000 volunteers have served in 143 countries. 07/19/2023 12:00 AM
Restaurant Closing Brings Thoughts
Restaurant Closing Brings Thoughts
July 13, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: While there may have been more shocking and disappointing headlines in your newspaper since The Lexington Gazette started up in 1801, I will leave that up to local historians. But when I saw “Southern Inn Restaurant Closes” heading in last week’s edition, that was it for me. Another local restaurant just didn’t close its doors. A Lexington landmark, lighted sign and all, went dim. It became off-limits, not just to VMI cadets. 07/19/2023 12:00 AM
Seminar Can Help Reduce Fear Of Snakes
Seminar Can Help Reduce Fear Of Snakes
July 17, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: Summer time is when we commonly see our reptile friends, snakes. Many of us do not see them that way, particularly the poisonous snakes in our area (copperheads, rattle snakes). Many other snakes are non-poisonous. All of them serve an ecological purpose. Understanding the limits of the risk with poisonous snakes will help us reduce our fear. 07/19/2023 12:00 AM

A strong case can be made for Virginia spending more on K-12 education. According to a report issued last week by the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission, the state is significantly short-changing its public schools. 07/19/2023 12:00 AM

Wham!

According to a recent article in The New York Times, cottage cheese, the lumpy dairy product embraced by my mother’s generation as a necessary component of any reducing diet, is enjoying a bump in popularity. This is due in part to members of the online platform TikTok pairing it with yellow mustard to create a healthy alternative to calorie-laden dips containing either sour cream, cream cheese or both. 07/12/2023 12:00 AM

Recalling Powell’s ‘Masterful Compromise’
Recalling Powell’s ‘Masterful Compromise’
Forty-five years ago this summer, a divided U.S. Supreme Court, in a ruling authored by Associate Justice Lewis F. Powell – a distinguished alumnus of Washington and Lee University – held that colleges and universities could consider race as one factor among others in admissions decisions. This was the law of the land until two weeks ago, when the court ruled that race could no longer be considered in determining which students are admitted. 07/12/2023 12:00 AM

June 28, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: Public utility corporations are different in different states. Here in Virginia, our PUC is called the State Corporation Commission, and has three members who are appointed by the governor with the authority to regulate utilities. 07/05/2023 12:00 AM

You open your bank statement to do your monthly account reconciliation, (yes, you do this religiously every month), and you see a check you don’t recognize. It’s not in your check register as a paper check or debit transaction. You don’t recognize the payee. You realize that it’s a very clever forgery – the image of the check has the correct bank routing number and your account number, and even your printed name and address and the bank name - but it’s not your check. And it’s for a significant amount of money. 07/05/2023 12:00 AM

New State THC Law Questioned
June 26, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: Starting on the first of July, Governor Youngkin - and no few legislators from both parties - will make good on a false dichotomy: prioritizing a crackdown on hemp-derived THC products over the implementation of a legal cannabis market. 06/28/2023 12:00 AM
