The Rockbridge area, with its rich history, has much to celebrate in May, which is designated as National Historic Preservation Month. We are indebted to many individuals and organizations who have contributed to efforts to preserve the relics of our bountiful local history. The Historic Lexington Foundation, Rockbridge Historical Society, Paxton House Historical Society, Brownsburg Museum, Stonewall Jackson House, George C. Marshall Museum, Virginia Military Institute Museum, and Washington and Lee University’s special collections and museums are among the guardians of our local history. 05/17/2023 12:00 AM

‘Virginia Deserves Real Chief Diversity Officer’
‘Virginia Deserves Real Chief Diversity Officer’
May 3, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: Martin D. Brown is Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s third appointee to the position of chief diversity officer of the state of Virginia in his short stint as governor. Mr. Brown’s time in this important job is now up since he has repudiated in a recent speech at VMI the entire basis of the mission for his office. He is wasting taxpayer’s money. He gets paid $160,000, plus benefits, perks and travel expenses. 05/10/2023 12:00 AM

It’s definitely happening but there are places where local newspapers are hanging in, if not exactly thriving. Community papers that are surviving tend to be locally owned or in small groups of 5-10 newspapers with the owner active in daily operations. 05/10/2023 12:00 AM

More Thoughts On Gold Star Memorial
The consensus among folks who have commented publicly on Lexington City Council’s recent decision to approve a Gold Star Memorial is that they support the concept of honoring families in our community who have lost loved ones in military conflicts. Everyone appears to be supportive of the idea of such a memorial – just not necessarily at the proposed site at Jordans Point Park. 05/10/2023 12:00 AM

GOP Playing ‘Dangerous Game’ On Debt Ceiling
GOP Playing ‘Dangerous Game’ On Debt Ceiling
May 1, 2023 Editor, the News-Gazette: In steering us towards defaulting on our debt and sinking our nation’s economy, Rep. Ben Cline and his colleagues are attempting to hold hostage funding for crucial programs. How many of his constituents really want to see deep cuts to services our most vulnerable children and seniors depend on? Is this really the time to drastically reduce opioid addiction treatments? Or railroad safety inspections? 05/03/2023 12:00 AM
