Maury ‘Being Spoiled … To Benefit One Group’
Aug. 25, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: I have spent my summers in the same swimming hole on the Maury River since 1958 - upriver from the bridge in Rockbridge Baths. There was little change for the first 30 years: snails galore, turtles, frogs, tadpoles, healthy fish. The water was crystal clear. 08/30/2023 12:00 AM
Another Take On JLARC Study
Another Take On JLARC Study
Aug. 23, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: Will more dollars for our public schools produce better students? That’s the old “bucks for brains” question, one always answered by educators in the affirmative. They are always in the money chase. None of this is mentioned in your report of last week, “Officials Urge Action On JLARC Study.” 08/30/2023 12:00 AM

Drainage Of Lake Raises Questions
Drainage Of Lake Raises Questions
Aug. 25, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: On a recent sweltering August day, I headed over to Goshen Pass to spend some time cooling down in Rockbridge County’s premier swimming pool. It is a natural wonder, large enough for one to swim super long laps, and to accommodate as many people as can line up their cars along Va. 39. 08/30/2023 12:00 AM

When Will ‘Defiling’ Of Maury Stop?
When Will ‘Defiling’ Of Maury Stop?
Aug. 20, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: The Capitol Council of the BSA in Bethesda, Md., has been draining Lake Merriweather daily since July 28. The Maury River is polluted with the green, murky sediment flowing from this man-made lake. The recreational enjoyment of the river is impaired; the Maury Service Authority must treat the water differently, which increases cost for private citizens and businesses, and the small life forms of the river are smothered to the determent of the health of the river. 08/23/2023 12:00 AM
August Draining Of Lake Criticized
August Draining Of Lake Criticized
Aug. 16, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: At the height of a deeply hot summer came August, capped by the heat dome that curtained the South. It drew both Rockbridge residents and people from afar to the waters of the Maury River to frolic in its cool and shade by its shores. Their cars lined the road through Goshen Pass, and the calls of children rang up and down the mountains. 08/23/2023 12:00 AM
