D.A.R.E. Returns
The Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program returned to Buena Vista Public Schools this year for the first time since the 1990s. Buena Vista City Police Sgt. John Snider taught 10 core lessons to fifth-graders at Enderly Heights Elementary School during weekly visits to the school. ABOVE, the students receive certificates for completing the program from Snider at an assembly Jan. 20. BELOW, students were able to celebrate their hard work with an after-party and refreshments that day. The latest version of the D.A.R.E. program is much different from the original program established in the 1980s, which revolved mostly around drug abuse. In 2022-2023, the program focuses heavily on “empowering students to do the right thing” and “making healthy choices,” including saying “no” to drugs, Snider noted. (Hope Huger photos)

Second Grade May Be Moved To Enderly
Buena Vista school leaders are beginning to brainstorm some advantageous changes for the district. With an influx of pre-kindergarten students, Kling Elementary School is running out of building space to provide adequate educational services. Teachers are getting creative to make things work – some teachers are even using their closets to provide separate remedial classes, Kling Principal Lisa Clark noted.
