On Sept. 18, 2026, Robert Moore Pickral succumbed to pancreatic cancer after an 18-month battle.

Bob was born Feb. 6, 1949, in Lexington, the son of George Monroe Pickral and Edna McCormick Pickral. He was accompanied by his twin brother, Tommy.

After graduating from Lexington High School he attended Virginia Military Institute earning a bachelor of science in biology in 1971. He then attended the Medical College of Virginia, becoming a doctor of medicine in 1975.

After serving three years as brigade surgeon in Berlin, Germany, Bob relocated back to Lexington in 1981 with his wife in order to establish a family practice business. For the next 38 years, Bob proudly served the community as a beloved family physician.

Following retirement in 2017, Bob devoted his time to travel, visiting family and friends and playing golf, including many bucket list trips to the world's most iconic golf courses. His "Cracker Barrel philosopher" pontifications never ceased to entertain and were usually spot on. He never tired of spirited discussions often taking the role of Devil's advocate to keep things lively.

Bob was preceded in death by his son, John Myers Pickral; his granddaughter, Laura Grace Pickral; and his twin, Thomas Monroe Pickral. 

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nancy Atthowe Pickral; his son, George (Lindsay); his daughter, Emily (Andy); and grandchildren Joseph, Van, Evie and June.

Funeral arrangements are private and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
