May 30, 1973

Federal agents arrested a Lexington man on charges involving $150,000 worth of hashish that had been mailed to him from outside the United States. -A public hearing on the 1973-74 Buena Vista City budget drew a large crowd at Parry McCluer school auditorium. The topic of major interest at this meeting of city council was the proposed 25cent increase in the real estate tax rate, which would raise the existing rate of $3.60 to $3.85 per hundred dollars of assessed value. - The nationwide gas shortage affected Rockbridge area distributors and stations in degrees varying from “no problem at all” to very severe.

June 4, 2003

A tree fell on the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house at the corner of Jackson Avenue and Preston Street. The fraternity house sustained minor damage. The tree was within days of being cut down by the university. - Marjorie Phillips retired after 20 years as director of the handbell choir at Lexington Presbyterian Church.
