The Rockbridge County School Board accepted the resignation of Principal George L. Hurt of Natural Bridge High School. Sam Johnson was named his successor. - Students at Washington and Lee University were getting pumped for a lacrosse match with the University of Virginia. W&L’s team was ranked sixth in a national poll while UVA was ranked third. - Students at Waddell Elementary School performed the traditional May Pole dance at the conclusion of a May Day program on the school grounds.

The Rev. Al Sharpton and Dick Morris were on hand for the three-day spring kickoff for the 2004 Democratic Mock Convention at W&L.. - Sue Ann Mead died at her home on Jefferson Street. Mrs. Mead was an active leader in many community efforts including the Rockbridge Area Free Clinic and the Rockbridge Area Relief Association.
