March 21, 1973

Maj. James R. Berger, recently released from a prisoner of war camp in North Vietnam, gave a news conference at Virginia Military Institute’s Smith Hall. Despite his long imprisonment, Berger looked well and frequently smiled as he fielded questions. - Lexington and Natural Bridge high school students took top honors at the Rockbridge County Science Fair at Rockbridge High School. - Mrs. Leonard Hotinger retired as secretary of the county electoral board, a positions she had held since 1958.

Virginia “Ginny” Hess was named the 50th Citizen of the Year at the annual Lions Club awards ceremony at the American Legion Hall building in Buena Vista. She was honored for her efforts to save the historic Paxton House in Glen Maury Park. -An estimated 200 people attended a memorial service at Buena Vista Presbyterian Church for George Cunningham. Mr. Cunningham, a well known running enthusiast, succumbed to cancer at age 83. -A proposal was made to house the courts and county administrative offices in the old Kmart building in Stonewall Square.
