Homer E. Derrick retired from the First National Bank of Lexington after 48 years in the banking industry. - The Lexington District of the Virginia Telephone and Telegraph Co. had construction and improvement projects totaling nearly $1 million for 1973. The largest project was an addition to the Lexington office to include a central office and administrative offices. - Two Washington and Lee University students were engaged in horseplay at the Sigma Chi fraternity house when they fell over a secondstory banister and onto the floor down below. One of the brothers sustained a skull fracture and was listed in serious condition in intensive care at Roanoke Memorial Hospital

A large crowd turned out for an Effinger PTA sponsored forum on the future of small schools. Many came out in favor of keeping schools like Effinger open. - About 70 Rockbridge area residents traveled to Washington, D.C., to take part in a massive protest against the U.S. getting involved in a war with Iraq. - Lee-Jackson Day was celebrated in Lexington with a parade in the downtown, a formation of ranks on the Virginia Military Institute parade ground, and a service at Lee Chapel.
