The Kroger Store in Lexington began the new year with a new manager, Gerald E. “Jerry” Saunders. - Eleven police cars were approved for the Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Department by the Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors. Each of the 10 deputies and the sheriff had their own cars. - Mrs. Eugene Paxton, office supervisor for Sigma Nu, made three small flags with Sigma Nu insignia for astronaut Ronald E. Evans, command module pilot for the Apollo 17 mission and a Sigma Nu alumnus.

The Rockbridge County School Board began budget deliberations for the next year with one objective in mine – to increase teachers’ benefits. Assistant Superintendent John Reynolds planned to seek bids from two other health insurance companies. - Roy Fauber announced he would not seek re-election for his seat on the Board of Supervisors. Carroll Comstock said he intended to seek Fauber’s seat. - Virginia Military Institute basketball star Jason Conley, who led all of Division I in scoring as a freshman, left VMI to enroll at the University of Missouri.
