Collierstown

On Sunday, May 28, the Rev. Bernard Bangley led the 11 a.m. worship service at the Collierstown Presbyterian Church. Guest pianist was Susan Irvine. The congregation celebrated Pentecost by wearing red and giving to the Pentecost Offering in support of children and youth activities. Following the worship service the community Memorial Day Service was held at the top of Cemetery Hill.

On Sunday, May 28, the Rev. Bernard Bangley led the 11 a.m. worship service at the Collierstown Presbyterian Church. Guest pianist was Susan Irvine. The congregation celebrated Pentecost by wearing red and giving to the Pentecost Offering in support of children and youth activities. Following the worship service the community Memorial Day Service was held at the top of Cemetery Hill.

Providing leadership for the service were Roger Lees (USAF), Richard Davis (U.S. Navy retired), Lindsey Davis, David McCormick (U.S. Army), and Chase Pooley. Don and Joyce Reid and John Montgomery placed American flags on veterans’ graves and arranged for seating and bottled water to be available. Performing “Taps” at the conclusion of the service was trumpeter Leslie Sparling. A wreath of magnolia leaves crafted by Janet Scott was placed at the flagpole in memory of the veterans buried in the Collierstown Presbyterian Cemetery.

Ella Belle Clark and Gatha Hall celebrated their 90th birthdays on Sunday, May 28, at the Collierstown Presbyterian Church. They were surrounded by a large crowd of family and friends honoring them and sharing in the day’s festivities. A s s choolmates and friends that frequently talked about having a birthday party together to celebrate their 90th birthdays, their children often heard of their party plans as they were growing up and decided to make them a reality. Many thanks to all who came to the party and to those who sent birthday cards and letters honoring these two special women.

The “Summer Bible Roundup” Vacation Bible School begins on Sunday, June 4, at 6 p.m. at the Palmer Community Center. The community’s churches are hosting VBS at the Palmer Community Center from 6 to 8:30 p.m. nightly the week of June 4-9. VBS has a western theme this year with classes available for all ages and adults. Supper will be provided nightly. Register by scanning the QR code found on the VBS flyers, coming early before VBS begins at 6, or by contacting one of the sponsoring churches: Union View Advent Christian Church, Collierstown Baptist, Collierstown Presbyterian, Collierstown United Methodist, Oxford Presbyterian, and the Mt. Horeb United Methodist churches.

On Sunday, June 11, at 11 a.m., Union View Advent Christian Church will hold its worship service at Lake Robertson. A traditional summer picnic for the membership and friends of the church will follow the service. Members are asked to “save the date,” bring friends, and several covered dishes to share.

Get your summer reading off to a great start by visiting the Rockbridge Regional Library’s bookmobile on the grounds of the Collierstown Presbyterian Church each Wednesday from 2:15 to 4 p.m.
