Chandler Just Misses PM Record

Parry McCluer High School junior Kovyk Chandler placed third of 48 runners in the boys’ 1600-meter run Blue Demon Invitational on Saturday in Christiansburg.

Finishing just 0.15 seconds shy of the PM 1600-meter run set by Dylan May in 2020, Chandler completed the race in 4:26.62, a personal record.

After the meet, PM head coach Chris Poluikis said, “I just wanted to give him one more really good mile before regionals.”

Poluikis said that Chandler, the lone PM athlete competing at the meet, was in the middle of the pack for most of the race, but really pushed the pace at the end. “It was the last meet for most of these kids for the regular season,” said Poluikis. “A lot of them were going for PRs.”

The Blues were scheduled to compete in the Pioneer District meet at Giles High School in Pearisburg on Monday. The top six individuals, as well as those qualifying by time or throwing distance, will return to Giles for the Region 1C meet next Wednesday, May 24.
