RC Has Strong Showing At Amherst Meet

With a strong finish to the regular season, the Rockbridge County High School track and field teams won four events at the Amherst Twilight Invitational on Friday night at Amherst County High School.

For the RC boys, senior Andrew Brannon won the 800-meter run and the 1600meter run and was a member of the winning 4 X 800meter relay team. For the RC girls, junior Nicole Black claimed the 1600-meter run.

Black finished the 1600meter run 5:57.49, just ahead of the runner-up, freshman teammate Dorothy Lewis, who crossed the line in 5:57.9 In the boys’ 800-meter run, Brannon finished in a personal-record (PR) time of 2:11.06 to edge the runnerup, Brookville’s Benjamin Abatecola, (2:11.47). Brannon won the 1600-meter run in 5:08.79, and sophomore teammate Alexander Miller placed second in 5:16.52. Miller finished fifth in the 800-meter run in 2:26.36.

Brannon and Miller teamed up with Will Gibbs and Jordan Imler to win the 4 X 800-meter relay in a season- best time of 9:15.8, while Rustburg placed second in 9:22.71.

Gibbs placed fourth in the 1600-meter run in 5:28.91.

The RC boys placed fifth in the 4 X 100-meter run in 54.43 seconds. Team members were Caden Culp, Ethan Drake, Thomas Jones and Spencer Pfaff.

Konner Orebaugh led the RC boys in the 400-meter dash, placing sixth in 59.07 seconds, and he finished 10th in the 200-meter dash in 26.25. Jones came in 10th in the 400-meter dash in 1:10.54.

Pfaff placed seventh in the 400-meter dash in 1:01.6 and finished 17th in the 100meter dash in 13.51.

Hunter Howald placed 11th in the 200-meter dash in 26.74, and Drake came in 18th in the 100-meter dash in 13.72.

Culp placed 14th in the 200meter dash in 28.64 seconds, finished 16th in the 100-meter dash in 13.26 seconds, and came in 18th in the long jump with a leap of 14 feet, 10 inches.

Howald represented the RC boys in throws, placing 10th in the discus with a heave of 81-10 and finishing 13th in the shot put with a toss of 28-4.

For the RC girls, in addition to her win, Black placed third in the 300-meter hurdles in 58.96 seconds and finished ninth in the long jump with a PR leap of 14-1.25.

Distance runner Grace Rolon placed second in two races, finishing the 800-meter run in 2:41.75 and completing the 3200-meter run in 13:27.1.

The RC girls won the 4 X 100--meter relay in 1:02.23. Team members were Madeline Doerfier, Alice Gresham, Evelyn Mc-Clung and Melissa Mejia.

Kate Holston placed ninth in the 400-meter dash in 1:13.7, while Gresham finished 12th in the 200-meter dash in 32.74 seconds and came in 12th in the 400-meter dash in 1:21.88.

Ieva Grundmane placed 13th in the 200-meter dash in 34.41, while McClung finished 11th in the 400-meter dash in 1:16.94 and came in 13th in the 100meter dash in 14.94.

Doerfier placed 14th in the 100-meter dash in 15.5, and Mejia finished 17th in 16.32.

Representing the RC girls in throws was Bri Marando, placing fourth in the discus with a heave of 88-9 and finishing fifth in the shot put with a toss of 27-8.

In the team standings, the RC boys and girls both placed fifth of seven teams. Amherst County won the boys’ meet with 125 points, Rustburg (102) placed second, and Brookville (94) finished third. Rounding out the standings were Martinsville (85), RC (56), Liberty (Bedford) (55) and Northside (30).

Liberty (Bedford) won the girls’ meet with 100 points, while Amherst County (99) placed second, and Brookville (89) finished third. Completing the standings were Rustburg (87), RC (57), Northside (52) and Martinsville (39).

The Wildcats will travel to Bridgewater to compete in the Valley District meet today, Wednesday, at Turner Ashby, starting at 5 p.m.

The top six individuals and top three relay teams, as well as those qualified by distance or time, will advance to the Region 3C meet, which will take place on Tuesday at Broadway.
