Beef Genomics For Commercial Cattle

After addressing health management, the other piece of the puzzle necessary to market top quality calves is genetics.

After addressing health management, the other piece of the puzzle necessary to market top quality calves is genetics.

Thanks to DNA sequencing technology, there is simple and reasonably priced analysis that can identify key performance characteristics in commercial cattle and identify individual calves that may need to find a local market alternative rather than attempt to adapt them to a new environment.

This field of analytical science is called genomics and folks are invited to come learn its potential application to their cattle at an educational meeting sponsored by the Rockbridge Cattlemen’s Association.

The seminar “Genomics for Cattle Producers” will be held Monday, Jan. 23, at the Raphine Volunteer Fire Department at 6 p.m. The program is free and will include light refreshments. Those who wish to attend the seminar are asked to pre-register by calling the Rockbridge Extension Office at (540) 463-4734 or send email to [email protected] by Friday, Jan. 20.
