Support For Ukrainian Families Appreciated
Support For Ukrainian Families Appreciated
April 24, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: We are thankful to ever so many local friends, many of whom are active volunteers assisting daily, for their hugely generous support for the three Ukrainian families now living in Lexington. 04/26/2023 12:00 AM

‘Bother To Vote In Primaries’
April 19, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: Not long ago, America was a place where racism, anti-semitism, xenophobia, misogyny, homophobia, white nationalism and Christian bigotry, while whispered between adherents, were thought too embarrassing to be publicly acknowledged. No more. Trump tapped into the hate that has always existed. 04/26/2023 12:00 AM
Preserving, Protecting Local News
Preserving, Protecting Local News
We like to think that those of us in the local news business provide a vital service essential to the proper functioning of a democracy. The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution enshrines the right of free speech. This right can only be exercised by an informed citizenry. This newspaper and other local news outlets perform the function of keeping citizens informed. 04/26/2023 12:00 AM

‘Eyesore’ Should Be Cleaned Up
April 17, 2023 Editor: The News-Gazette As you travel westbound on U.S. 60, Midland Trail, nearing Lexington, just past the Goodwill store, there is an incredible eyesore of an abandoned house close to the roadway on the right side. The roof is crumbling, as well as the porch and walls, and the “yard” around the house is covered in litter and trash. 04/19/2023 12:00 AM

‘Can We Also Plan For Nature?’
April 14, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: Word is out. Clearly some folks enjoy what we call progress (which can also become sprawl), for that is good for business. 04/19/2023 12:00 AM

Guns, GOP Not The ‘Reasons For The Mayhem’
April 12, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: Our local paper contained a letter to the editor recently basically laying blame for the ills of society on Republicans. She is rightfully upset by the Nashville shootings and others. We all are. Of course, the reasons of what to do about it are where divergence begins. Her arguments are the same starting with “common sense” and ending with “assault.” 04/19/2023 12:00 AM

It’s GOP ‘Policy To Keep Weapons Of War On Our Streets’
April 12, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: It is Republican policy to keep weapons of war on our streets. There are three reasons for this: their donors desire this, their base demands it, and they see it a key method to their obtaining and retaining power outside the ballot box. 04/19/2023 12:00 AM

Let’s Makeup
Let’s Makeup
For as long as I can remember I have loved makeup. Of course when I was little, I was discouraged from wearing it, but that didn’t stop me from secretly exper imenting with it. I can remember wanting to emulate Marcia Brady’s shimmering eyeshadow by smearing Crest toothpaste on my eyelids. Bad idea. I’m really surprised I didn’t blind myself. 04/19/2023 12:00 AM

Tree Removal At Jordans Point
Tree Removal At Jordans Point
Lexington takes its trees seriously. The late Rev. LaVert Taylor, an African American minister and member of City Council, once chided his colleagues on Council for what he viewed as their caring more about trees than the city’s troubled youth. We wouldn’t go that far but it is definitely true that many Lexington residents are passionate about their trees. 04/19/2023 12:00 AM

The Maytag Repairman Has Been Retired
The Maytag Repairman Has Been Retired
Recently I was confronted with one of my pet peeves – the inability, or at least, the difficulty of repairing something. I’m a tinkerer by nature, and also cheap, and I hate to toss something that I think could be fixed, if parts or some sort of repair manual were available. But the ever-accelerating “throw-away economy” makes fixing anything a real chore. Add to that the fact that so many things made today are of poor quality, and are designed for a relatively short useful life, so you’re forced to buy one again. 04/12/2023 01:00 AM
