Collierstown Visit
Collierstown Visit
When Santa came to visit Collierstown children on Dec. 9, he had to make a detour from the field across from the Effinger firehouse to the Collierstown Baptist Church because of rainy weather. However, children had lots of fun there meeting with him and participating in various crafts. The event was sponsored by the community churches. (Stephanie Mikels Blevins photos) 12/19/2023 11:00 PM

Sheridan House Demolished
Sheridan House Demolished
The Sheridan House located at 201 N. Randolph St. was demolished last week. The historic home was heavily damaged in a fire in February of 2016, after which it went through several owners while no repairs were made to the house. Earlier this year, a petition from citizens requesting that the city take steps to prompt some action, either to tear the building down or to repair it, was presented to the Lexington City Council. Owner Chy Clark submitted a request for demolition to the Lexington Architecture Review Board to demolish the building, which was granted. Clark this week declined to comment on future plans for the property. 12/19/2023 11:00 PM

Dress Rehearsal For A White Christmas?
Exactly two weeks before Christmas morning, Rockbridge County residents who live in higher elevations awoke to a white Dec. 11 after the storm system that brought rain to the area on Sunday left snow in its wake as it left the area. This photo was taken on Sterrett Road in Fairfield, where about 2 inches of snow had fallen overnight. (Darryl Woodson photo) 12/12/2023 11:00 PM
Santa’s Helpers At Spencer’s
Santa’s Helpers At Spencer’s
Employees of Spencer’s Home Center are seen with bicycles and other toys that were loaded up in a truck last week to be delivered to 115 children in need throughout the Rockbridge area. The effort was part of the E&A toy drive undertaken by Erica Slagle and Amber Flint that is serving 214 children this year. Rockbridge Area Social Services provided the names of people in need. Tammy Reid of Spencer’s spearheaded several initiatives to help families in need this holiday season, including a coat drive and efforts to provide other necessities to those who need them. “I don’t think people realize how much need we have in the Rockbridge area,” said Reid. “People here want to give. It’s been a privilege to be part of this.” Employees of Spencer’s also helped the Rockbridge Christmas Basket program make deliveries in the Mountain View, Fairfield and south Lexington areas.
