Summer Storm
What the National Weather Service describes as a straight-line wind event toppled several large trees and blew over an outbuilding in Glasgow during the storm that went through the Rockbridge area Friday afternoon. One tree, pictured above, fell partially on a house on Virginia Street. The storm also brought hail to Glasgow and other parts of the area, as seen in the photo at left. (Carolyn Bradley photos)

Juneteenth In Lexington
The Lex Rock BV Juneteenth celebration drew a crowd to Richardson Park in Lexington Saturday afternoon and evening for food, music, vendors, a talent show, basketball contests and fellowship. Providing DJ services in the afternoon was (at top right) William “DJ Mook” Jones, while Apple Butter Soul performed in the evening. Running a free throw shooting contest was (below) was Eric Walker. Ginny Sieminski (in photo at bottom left) offered tattoo services, and Josh Ronnenberg drew caricatures. BV Schools Update Budget
Buena Vista City Public Schools has updated its FY24 budget after receiving less money from the city than the School Board had initially asked for in its proposed budget. Discussed at the School Board’s monthly meeting in May, the division amended its 2023-2024 budget to reflect the allowances of the city and state’s current budget models.

Virginia Military Institute welcomes Dr. Melissa S. Krawiec (née Williams) ’01, as the new Institute physician, 25 years after she signed the matriculation book Aug. 19, 1997, as a member of the first coeducational class. She continues the care formerly provided by Dr. David Copeland, who recently retired after treating the Corps of Cadets for 31 years.

Larsen Assumes New Role In U.S. Navy
Lexington native Hayes Larsen has been selected as the new Commanding Officer at Defense Service Office, West in San Diego, Calif. Starting on Aug. 3, Capt. Larsen will assume oversight of all defense counsel services for sailors on the west coast. His promotion to Captain in the Navy’s Judge Advocate General Corps in May 2022 paved the way for this position. The promotion ceremony was held on the historic battleship USS Wisconsin, with Admiral Jonathan Stephens presiding over the event, surrounded by Larsen’s loved ones and colleagues.
