Narrows Defeats PM Girls

Narrows snapped the Parry McCluer High School girls basketball team’s nine-game winning streak and assumed sole possession of first place in the Pioneer District with a 69-38 victory over the visiting Fighting Blues on Friday evening.

PM secured a 34-30 overtime win at Bath County three nights earlier, as the Blues wrapped up the week with a 14-3 overall record and a 4-1 mark in district play.

In Friday’s matchup, Karsyn Reed posted 33 points, five assists and six steals to lead the Green Wave (12-4 overall, 7-0 district) to the lopsided victory. Kailyn Jones added 14 points and seven rebounds for Narrows, and Ellyn Bowles recorded eight points and four assists.

Peira Conner notched nine points and nine rebounds to pace the Blues. Victoria Hamilton tallied nine points and four assists for PM, while Josie Martinez and Emory Slagle chipped in six points apiece.

The Green Wave opened the game on a 21-5 firstquarter run and never let the Blues back into it. For the night, Narrows tallied 27 points off of 27 PM turnovers, crafted an overall 24-0 advantage in transition markers and outscored the Blues 38-22 in the paint.

Marayka Knoetze scored six points and dished out three assists for the Green Wave, and Addyson Johnson added four points. Natalie Mohler totaled four points and four assists for PM, and Kayleigh Ramsey also finished with four markers.

PM escaped Bath County with a 34-30 overtime win on Tuesday of last week.

Conner led a balanced offensive attack for the Blues with eight points. Hamilton and Slagle each registered six points, while Martinez and Mohler notched five markers apiece.

Addison Lockridge scored a game-high 13 points for the Chargers (7-5, 2-5), and Trinity Forbes added 12 points.

PM drained four 3-pointers in the first half in building up a 21-15 lead by the break. But Bath limited the Blues to just three made field goals after the intermission, and the Chargers outscored PM 8-2 in the fourth period – getting six points in the frame from Lockridge – to force overtime.

Neither team connected from the floor in the extra session. But PM converted on 6-of-8 attempts at the foul line, getting two makes apiece from Conner and Mohler, to secure the victory.

The Blues were set to visit Eastern Montgomery on Monday. PM is slated to entertain Narrows at 5:30 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, followed by a trip to Craig County to conclude the regular season on Friday, when the junior varsity game will begin at 5:30 p.m. Check www.thenews-gazette.com for any weather-related schedule updates.
