Look up! A partial lunar eclipse will be visible over Rockbridge County starting Thursday night.
The eclipse will start around 9:20 p.m. and last until 3:01 a.m. Friday, with a viewing window of nearly six hours. The eclipse will be at its peak at around 12:12 a.m.
A partial lunar eclipse is when Earth moves between the sun and the moon, but they are not completely aligned. Part of the moon then passes into the Earth’s dark central shadow, known as the umbra.
Unlike when viewing solar eclipses, there is no need to wear special eye protection for a lunar eclipse. The best viewing spots in Rockbridge County are anywhere you can find a clear sky.
Rain and storms are in the forecast for Thursday, according to the National Weather Service, so make sure to check your local forecast before venturing out to glimpse the moon.
