Lexington City Council will be revisiting the future of two cityowned properties early in the coming year.
Echelon Resources Inc. has terminated its contract with the city of Lexington, ending its plans to develop apartment buildings on city-owned land on Spotswood Drive and the former VDOT property on Waddell Street. Echelon informed the city of its decision to step away from the Spotswood development on Oct. 1, and stepped away from the VDOT development later.
Before Echelon terminated its contract, the city put out a new request for proposals for the VDOT property to solicit alternative proposals to Echelon’s for the site. The city received one proposal for a 108-unit multifamily development from Maryland-based developer Enterprise Community Partners Inc. The proposal is for three-story “garden style apartment buildings” with amenities for residents, such as a clubhouse with a community room and business center.
The city has not made a decision about whether to accept Enterprise’s proposal, and City Manager Tom Carroll told The News-Gazette that he believes that City Council will discuss whether it wants to proceed with the development of both properties at its goal setting session on Jan. 11.
“I anticipate the city will forge a new plan for redeveloping these [properties] early in 2025 with opportunities for resident engagement then,” he said.
