Lexington City Council approved measures on Thursday, Nov. 21, to allow the expansion of Evergreen and Oak Grove cemeteries, by rezoning portions of city-owned land from residential use to parks and open space use. The decision ensures the cemeteries can continue operating on all associated land.
The approved changes involve rezoning a 1.855-acre portion of Evergreen Cemetery and a 0.445-acre portion of Oak Grove Cemetery from the General Residential (R-1) zoning district to the Parks and Open Space (P-OS) zoning district. Additionally, Council granted conditional use permits to formally allow cemetery use on all land associated with both cemeteries. These zoning changes reflect Lexington’s efforts to streamline land use for cemetery operations while adhering to updated regulations. Both Evergreen and Oak Grove cemeteries will now continue operations on fully integrated parcels under the Parks and Open Space zoning designation.
