Aug. 8, 1973

The Lexington City School Board voted to raise the cost of milk from five cents to a dime per half pint for the city’s elementary school students. The increase was directly due to the end of federal subsidies for the milk program. - Children in the Rockbridge County School system were able to register for kindergarten for the first time. - Hank Williams Jr. performed a banjo concert at the East Lexington Speedway.

Aug. 13, 2003

Buena Vista celebrated a ground-breaking ceremony at the new golf course. - Thirty-five girls attended a cheerleading camp at the new air conditioned Central Elementary School gymnasium. - Lightning struck the transmitter for WREL’s AM frequency not once, not twice, not thrice, but four times. The fourth strike “cooked” the transmitter and knocked the station off the air.
