Lexington City Schools and City staff have scheduled three additional community conversations to provide information to city residents regarding the proposed local option sales tax referendum that is on the ballot for the November election.
The first of these additional informal open-house style meetings will be held on Thursday, Oct. 15 at noon. The second is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 20 at noon and the third will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 2. All three of these daytime meetings will be held in the Piovano Room at the Rockbridge Regional Library.
In addition, a pair of evening meetings, which were previously announced, have also been scheduled for the same purpose. The first of those will be in the cafeteria at Lylburn Downing Middle School on Oct. 20, and the third will be held in the second-floor conference room at Lexington City Hall on Washington Street. The meetings will run from 7-8 p.m. and 5-7 p.m., respectively.
All of these meetings are intended to provide information about the referendum and not to advocate for or against the ballot measure.
Questions about the proposed tax can be sent directly to Lexington City Manager Tom Carroll ([email protected]) or Lexington City Schools Superintendent Rebecca Walters ([email protected]). A list of frequently asked questions about the proposed tax is available on both the Lexington City website and the Lexington City School’s website.
If passed, the proposed referendum would allow the city to collect an additional one percent sales tax and use the revenue to help pay for several upcoming capital projects at Lylburn Downing Middle School and the city’s share of proposed projects at Rockbridge Count High School which are currently estimated to cost $8.6 million. The tax would be in place for five years and would generate an estimated $1.33 million annually for that purpose.
