RC Golfers Wrap Up Season

Rockbridge County High School junior golfers Davis Welsh and Parker Flint concluded the season at the Region 3C tournament on Monday of last week at Lake Monticello Golf Course in Palmyra.

Welsh fired an 88 on the challenging 18-hole, par-72 course, while Flint shot a 101. Tying for first place individually were LCA’s Tanner Haas and Western Albemarle’s Kennedy MacCleery, with each firing a 72.

The top two teams and the top three individuals outside of those teams advanced to the Class 3 state tournament, which was scheduled to take place yesterday at Cutalong at Tributer Resort in Mineral.

Reviewing the day for Welsh and Flint, RC head coach Garret Huffman said,” It was a tough day on the course … but it was great experience for them heading into their senior year next year.”

Western Albemarle won the tournament with a score of 306, while Liberty Christian was the other advancing team, shooting a 310 to place second of eight teams. Rounding out the top five were Monticello (326), Waynesboro (335) and Spotswood (347).

The Wildcats placed fifth of nine teams in the Shenandoah District this year, with Welsh placing third individually to earn all-district first-team honors. From the district, the top two teams, Waynesboro and Wilson Memorial, and the top five individuals outside of those teams advanced to the Region 3C tournament.

RC will graduate two seniors, captain Finbar Looney and Miles Holland.

Praising the seniors, Huffman, concluding his second year as the Wildcats’ head coach, said, “It was a joy to get to know them, and I appreciate them always leading by example.”

Pleased with the season, Huffman said, “I think we had a great year as a team. Even though we didn’t make it as a team to regionals, I believe everyone worked hard to improve throughout the year. There were several players who set personal best rounds throughout the season which was awesome to see.”

The Wildcats had five juniors and four sophomores this year. Huffman was optimistic about the future, hoping to return these nine players while adding incoming freshmen. “I’m excited to see what the 2027 season has in store,” he said.
