The Friends of Brushy Hills will host its annual Native Plant Sale this Saturday, Sept. 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the new overflow parking lot on Union Run.
The group will have a large variety of native trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants for sale: over 500 individual plants from about 40 species.
“These plants are as local as you’re going to get,” said a spokesperson. “Most are native to Rockbridge County and grow easily in local yards and gardens. Many are deer resistant. David Rosher, who rescued or grew most of these plants himself, will be running the sale. He’s happy to answer any questions about what a plant might need or where it will do well.”
Some available species include American sycamore, white oak, alternate-leaf dogwood, spicebush, maidenhair fern, Christmas fern, and broadleaf sedge. While some species are available in abundance, others are more limited. All plants for sale were either grown from seed, collected from Rosher’s yard, or saved from destruction during trail building and maintenance projects. All proceeds benefit Friends of Brushy Hills.
The new overflow parking lot is about a tenth of a mile southeast of the main trailhead (1010 Union Run). The sale will happen rain or shine.
