The kids will be back in school soon and the colleges will start their fall term. Before we say an unofficial goodbye to summer, we'll take a look at the beginning of summer in 1946.
The front page stories of the Rockbridge County News on June 6, 1946 were:
- Multiple stories about the area colleges and their end-of-term ceremonies – two for Virginia Military Institute and five for Washington and Lee, including a story about a ceremony to honor W&L men who either died or went missing in WW II.
- Two collection funds to combat cancer took place in May of that year and raised $1,670 collectively.
- The State Department of Health Bureau of T.B. Outpatient Services x-ray clinic was successful in the City of Lexington.
- Lexington High School bestowed diplomas on 28 graduating seniors.
Starting next month, a new class of local high school seniors will be experiencing the final stage of adolescence before they are sprung free into the world of young adulthood. Although high school experiences have evolved throughout the decades, the cycle of life continues. The photo of the Lexington High School graduating seniors, class of 1946, shows us that no matter how long it's been since you were in high school, this next generation will be reaching many of the same milestones, standing in the same places we once stood, and learning some hard lessons about growing up. Today's children are raised in a different environment than previous generations, but simply growing up is a constant process, occurring every day we are alive. Let us remember that, as a community and society, all generations are connected through the collective experiences of passing from childhood into adulthood. Congratulations to all incoming high school seniors!
