Do you remember spending most of the year in school, just waiting for it to end so you could be free for the summer? Do you remember what your favorite activity was, or the food your parents fed you that you just couldn't stand? Sometimes, as we get farther away from our more youthful days, we forget the little things that were important to us before we didn't have to think about taxes or meal planning. We may even forget that children are actually a part of our community. They may not know or have an opinion on the economic or political climate surrounding them, but they live in it and are affected by it. They have a place here with all of us.
For this series, we'll get to hear from two young citizens every week. They'll tell us about their hobbies and goals for the future. We'll get to know what's on their minds and maybe remember what it was like to be a kid again.
This week we have 10 year old Brigham:

What do you like most about school?
It's probably, like, recess because they're the most physical times at school and I'm a very active boy.
What is your favorite food? What about your least favorite?
It's chicken pot pie. It's basically a crust and everything and it has, like, carrots and peas and chicken inside. And it's really good.
[Least favorite] It's called black bean enchiladas.
Do you like to read? What do you like to read?
I like to read fantasy books like Percy Jackson.
Do you collect anything / play an instrument / play any sports? If not, what would you like to do?
I play a lot of sports like basketball and soccer. And I'm hoping to play trumpet when I'm in middle school because my sister plays the French horn and it's like really heavy to carry. But I play it sometimes and it's kind of fun, so I want to play trumpet because it's lighter and it's basically the same thing.
What country would you like to visit, and why?
I would like to visit Ireland. Wow, Ireland, because I want to learn their dances.
What do you want to do when you grow up?
I would like to be a pro soccer player or pro basketball player because, like I said earlier, I'm a very active kid and I like playing sports.
Tell me a goal you have in the future?
I want to become a millionaire. I would donate some to charity. Then, like, buy a house, buy cars.

And 12 year old Adelaide:

What do you like most about school?
I think I probably like band the most and cross country. Like especially volleyball, some sports in our school are like all the girls play it and they're all like really sassy or something, but cross country is like one big family and band too actually. That's what I really like about it. Also, I love music.
What is your favorite food? What about your least favorite?
There's a meal that we make and it's called sausage pasta, that's my favorite. It's this tomato sauce with cream cheese and spices. It's really good. It's very creamy.
[Least favorite] Tomato basil soup. It's kind of similar actually. I don't like it nonetheless. Something about it just grosses me out.
Do you like to read? What do you like to read?
Oh, I love to read. Right now I'm having a race with my dad to finish the Lord of the Rings, all the books. I've already finished the first one. I love fantasy. I like pretty much anything, actually. I mostly like fantasy/adventure, also I like random fact books and riddle books. I like those too.
Do you collect anything / play an instrument / play any sports? If not, what would you like to do?
I play French horn in the band and I play classical piano and then I also play keyboard in the jazz band. I really like music. Cross country, just one year since I just got to middle school. I'm going into seventh grade so I did it for sixth grade, I think I'm gonna do it this year too.
What country would you like to visit, and why?
I'd really like to visit Greece sometime because I'm very interested in all the myths and things and my dad can read Greek. I kind of wish he [taught me] but also I don't because it would take so much work to learn Greek.
What do you want to do when you grow up?
I want to be an author/illustrator. Just like I enjoy reading it, I really enjoy writing fantasy. I also enjoy writing short scary stories.
Tell me a goal you have in the future?
I would like to publish a book someday which is kind of going along with my other goal.
