There will be two Music At Noon programs at Lexington Presbyterian Church on two consecutive Wednesdays, with one slated for today, July 22, and another one July 29.
This week’s program will feature Charles Blueweiss, baritone, and William Mc-Corkle, piano, in a program of English music from the mid-20th century. The featured work will be the song cycle “Let Us Garlands Bring,” composed in 1942 by Gerard Finzi (1901-1956) on well-known texts by William Shakespeare. Admired for his gifts at setting the English language to music, Finzi is known for his solo vocal and choral compositions.
The concert will include a rarely heard piano composition by the pre-eminent British musician, Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), “The Lake in the Mountains,” composed in 1941.
The great Vaughan Williams, while not a teacher of Finzi, was a friend and mentor, and did much to promote and facilitate Finzi’s career.
The next concert in the ‘Music at Noon’ summer series, on Wednesday, July 29, will feature tenor Adam Williams, singing songs from the 1960’s and mid-to-late 1970’s.
