Raise your hand if you remember The Weekender!
The Weekender was a free distribution paper The News-Gazette put out from 1989 to 2015. It went to every home in Rockbridge County, Buena Vista and Lexington by mail and by carriers on Saturdays. It started off being mostly feature stories but as time went on, it ended up carrying some hard news also. Rising costs and advertiser changes were why we stopped it but it was pretty popular.
July 20, 1991:
An old photo of Downtown Lexington was on the front cover, as the city was celebrating the rededication of the Stonewall Jackson statue. There’s a story about the Historical Lexington Society’s plans and contributions to the town that takes up most of the front page. Along with the story and photo, there were two calendars. One calendar is only for immediate events and the other has key events for the next few months.
The Weekender was a small publication and had large sections dedicated to the Classifieds and TV viewing guide for the local weekend programming. Those are not included in this Flashback.
Aside from those two sections, this publication was very casual. If The News-Gazette could be seen as the straight-forward, hard working, 9-5 person in the group, The Weekender was the friend who liked to relax and have fun when the work week was over. This issue had puzzles, short stories, trivia, and of course, horoscopes. What's your sign?
