RCHS head baseball coach dies

RCHS head baseball coach dies

Rockbridge County High School announced Friday morning that head baseball coach and faculty member Travis Roadcap has died.

Officials did not release his cause of death.

Counselors will be available at the high school on Monday for students and staff.

“Coach Roadcap was far more than a coach. He was a dedicated teacher, a mentor, a leader, and a friend to countless students, athletes, colleagues, and families,” RCHS officials wrote. “His passion for education, commitment to his players, and positive impact on our school community will never be forgotten.”

Roadcap was named head coach in 2019 after serving as an assistant coach for five years. He also taught physical education, health and strength training.

"Our thoughts and heartfelt prayers are with the Roadcap family, the baseball program, and everyone whose lives were touched by Travis. His legacy will live on through the many people he inspired," school officials wrote. "He will be deeply missed and forever remembered."

Roadcap recently paired with Pure Eats as a celebrity chef for the Freedom Food Festival benefitting the RCHS baseball team, where the booth won the judge's choice award for the second year in a row.

Pure Eats owner and Lexington City Schools board member Kasey Potts paid tribute to Roadcap on Facebook, writing:

"Some people leave footprints. Others leave a ball field full of memories. Around here, everybody knew Roadcap. He loved Rockbridge, loved the game of baseball, and loved those kids like they were his own. He left his mark on so many lives, and this community will never be the same."

The school has announced a vigil for Roadcap at 6 p.m. on Saturday night at the baseball field.
