This past Sunday at Collierstown Presbyterian Church during the 11 a.m. worship service, Judy Goodbar talked with the congregation’s children about the significance of Memorial Day. She explained how to properly fold an American flag and had the children assist her in folding one. Elder Duaine Fitzgerald was the guest speaker at the worship service. On May 31, Fitzgerald will return as guest speaker for the 11 a.m. worship service.

The annual community Memorial Day Service was held on Sunday, May 24, in the Collierstown Presbyterian Church at 12:30 p.m. Providing leadership for the service were Chris Cartwright, Richard Davis (U.S. Navy retired), Lindsey Davis, Mark Fontenot (Virginia Air National Guard retired), Tonya Fontenot, Roger Lees (U.S.A.F.), and David McCormick (U.S. Army). During the service the names of veterans buried in the Collierstown Cemetery were read. Following the placement of a wreath, the service concluded with the playing of “Taps” by trumpeter Peter Del Vecchio.

On Saturday, May 30, the United Methodist Men will hold their monthly men’s breakfast at 9 a.m. in the fellowship hall of the Collierstown United Methodist Church.

Sunday, May 31, is Trinity Sunday for the Collierstown United Methodist Charge. A joint worship service for Collierstown and Mt. Horeb will be held at Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m. There will be no service at Collierstown United Methodist Church.

The Buffalo and Collierstown communities are preparing for Vacation Bible School that will be held the week of June 7-11 at the Palmer Community Center. VBS will begin with an evening meal at 5:30 p.m. and conclude at 8 nightly. Classes will be offered for all ages and will include a class for adults. Families and area residents are invited to come and enjoy Bible study, crafts, music and recreation. This year’s VBS theme will focus on Psalm 23. Children and adults will explore God as Shepherd, Guide, Comforter, Provider and King through David’s story. This year’s VBS is being sponsored by the seven community churches: Collierstown Baptist, Collierstown and Mt. Horeb United Methodist Churches, Collierstown and Oxford Presbyterian Churches, Rapps Mill Church and the Union View Advent Christian Church.

The Effinger Ruritan Club offers health care and adaptive equipment on loan to people recovering from falls, surgery, or undergoing physical therapy. Walkers, canes, wheelchairs, and other adaptive items are available at no charge.
