By Jonathan Schwab Parry McCluer High School senior thrower Griffin Harlow won the shot put to lead three PM boys who threw at the Golden Eagle Invitational on Saturday at Staunton River High School in Moneta.
Harlow had a season-best toss of 50 feet, 0.5 inches, which was a meet record, to win over Heritage’s Mehki Barksdale, whose runner-up throw went 48-3.
In the discus, Harlow placed fifth with a season-best throw of 139-5. James River’s Jake Beheler won with a heave of 157-3.
PM throwing coach Danny Cole said Harlow “is showing progress at this point, and it’s a great time of year to do that.”
PM senior Brenden Holdren placed 13th in the shot put with a toss of 40-9 and finished 23rd in the discus with a throw of 95-10. Senior teammate Levi Helper came in 21st in the discus with a heave of 98 feet and finished 29th in the shot put with a toss of 31-11.
With just three throwers, the PM boys placed 13th of 17 scoring teams, tallying 12 points. Heritage won the meet with 73 points, Cave Spring (72) placed second, and Rustburg (65) finished third. Rounding out the top five were Blacksburg (56) and Pulaski County (42).
The PM throwers and runners were scheduled to compete in the Pioneer District meet on Monday at Narrows. The top six individuals in each event, along with those qualified by time or distance, will advance to the Region 1C meet, which is scheduled to take place next Tuesday at Eastern Montgomery High School in Elliston.
