Sprinters Set Pace For RC Girls

Mitchell Qualifies For State In High Jump

Rockbridge County High School sophomore Ariana Mitchell qualified for the Class 3 state meet in the girls’ high jump, tying for second place to lead the RC girls track and field team in a Shenandoah District meet at Wilson Memorial last Wednesday in Fishersville.

The RC girls placed sixth of nine scoring teams, while the RC boys finished ninth.

Mitchell cleared 5 feet to qualify for the state meet by height, tying Wilson Memorial’s Katie Lawhorn. Fort Defiance’s Livia Clinedinst won the high jump, clearing 5-2. Mitchell earned allstate honors in the high jump during the indoor meet by placing seventh at the state meet with a mark of 5 feet. Her personal record is 5-2.

Mitchell also competed in two sprints, placing eighth in the 100-meter dash in 13.94 seconds and 14th in the 200-meter dash in 29.54.

Teammate Abigail Harding placed second in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.12 seconds and 10th in the long jump with a leap of 13 feet, 6.25 inches.

RC’s Emily Carroll placed second in the 300meter hurdles in 54.77 seconds and 22nd in the 200-meter dash in 29.01. Also racing for RC in the 300-meter hurdles was Kayleigh Knick, placing ninth in 59.57.

Sarah Lewis placed seventh in the 200-meter dash in 29.01 seconds, while Kyra Strowbridge finished ninth in the 100-meter dash in 13.96.

Kate Holston placed ninth in the 800-meter run in 2:45.57, while Azalea Whitehead finished 16th in the 400-meter dash in 1:21.49 and came in 20th in the 100-meter dash in 16.36 seconds.

Hannah Ivins led the RC girls in the 400meter dash, placing 12th in 1:15.23, and 18th in the 800-meter run in 3:10.48. Dasha Billias came in 17th in the 400-meter dash in 1:23.44, and Keziah Howard finished 18th in the 200-meter dash in 30.92 seconds.

The RC girls continued to improve in the 4 X 100-meter relay, placing second in 53.13 seconds, cutting nearly a second off the previous Saturday’s season-best time. Team members were Lewis, Howard, Strowbridge and Harding. Alleghany won in 50.18 seconds.

In the 4 X 400-meter relay, the RC girls placed third in 5:15.93. Team members were Lewis, Knick, Holston and Billias.

Throwing for the RC girls was Cate Wilson, placing ninth in the discus with a throw of 709.5 and tying for 13th place in the shot put with a toss of 23-1.

The RC boys placed second in the 4 X 800meter relay in 9:33.88, trailing only Buffalo Gap’s winning time of 9:13.25. Team members were Grant Swenty, Hudson Saunders and Jude and Luke Eichholz.

Swenty led the Wildcats in the 800-meter run, placing sixth in 2:13.84, while Luke Eichholz, finished eighth in 2:22.12, Jude Eichholz came in ninth in 2:22.35, and Saunders finished 16th in 2:32.53.

Jakob Bailey placed 10th in the 200-meter dash in 25.12 seconds and finished 17th in the long jump with a leap of 17-3.

Calvin Lambert led RC in the 200-meter dash, placing 16th in 25.91 seconds, while Evan Wilson came in 24th in 26.78 seconds. Wilson finished seventh in the 110-meter hurdles in 22.18 seconds and came in 22nd in the long jump, leaping 15-6.

Asher Lawrie led the RC boys in the 1600meter run, placing 18th in 7:15.87.

Tyshon Wilson finished 18th in the 400-meter dash in 1:06.64, placed 29th in the 100-meter dash in 12.99 seconds, and came in 29th in the 200-meter dash in 27.96.

Jhordane Campbell placed 23rd in the 400meter dash in 1:12.82, finished 29th in the 100meter dash in 13.38 seconds, and came in 15th in the high jump, clearing 4-11.

Alleghany was the winning girls’ team, with 197 points, while Fort Defiance (117) placed second, and Waynesboro (114.5) finished third. Rounding out the standings were Riverheads (55), Wilson Memorial (42), RC (40), Stuarts Draft (28.5), Buffalo Gap (13) and Staunton (8).

Riverheads and Wilson Memorial both scored 107 points to tie for first place in the boys’ meet. Alleghany (95) placed third, and Fort Defiance (74) and Waynesboro (70) rounded out the top five. Completing the standings were Stuarts Draft (67.5), Staunton (56.5), Buffalo Gap (46) and RC (14).

Today, Wednesday, the Wildcats will play host to district rivals in their only home meet of the season, starting at 5 p.m. On Friday, the Wildcats will travel to East Rockingham High School in Elkton for the third annual Rock ‘N’ Run the Valley Invitational.
