Parry McCluer High School senior throwers Griffin Harlow and Brenden Holdren had solid performances for the Blues’ boys indoor track and field team at the New River Invitational on Friday at Giles High School in Pearisburg.
Harlow improved from the previous weekend on both throws, placing fourth in the shot put with a toss of 49 feet, 6 inches and fifth in the discus with a heave of 133 feet.
PM throwing coach Danny Cole said Harlow is getting closer to where he was last season in the discus, but he’s been bothered by troublesome back issues. “It’s unfortunate for a senior with his potential to have to deal with this at such a young age,” said Cole. “However, he’s a trooper and continues to work and do everything he can do to finish out.”
Holdren placed ninth in the shot put with a toss of 39-6 and 16th in the discus with a heave of 92-2. “Brenden is still working on some basic techniques, and I anticipate some bigger jumps fairly soon when he develops those,” said Cole.
The coach plans to take the PM throwers to the Buffalo Invitational on Friday at Floyd County High School.
PM’s runners, who rested last weekend, will travel to Mathews, N.C., to race in the ASICS Carolina Distance Carnival on Friday and Saturday.
