17 Different RC Girls Score In Lacrosse Rout
The Rockbridge County High School girls lacrosse team boasts 24 players on its 2026 varsity roster. Take away goalies Ellie McKnight and Elle Werner, and that leaves 22 outfield athletes.
Last Monday, 17 of those Wildcats scored as RC (3-1) cruised past Christiansburg 24-0 in Lexington. Ten ’Cats notched at least two points in the game as the home side made quick work of its first Region 4D opponent of the season.
Sofia Gaydos led the way with five points on three goals and two assists, followed by two goals and two assists apiece from Anna Nye and Sarah Edgar. Adrianna Grue and Emma McKnight each posted two goals and one helper for RC, while Lola Mulitalo and Laura Ingram both finished with one goal and two assists.
Lily Gist scored a pair of goals, while Maria Calomeris and Lexi Samante rounded out the multi-point performances for the Wildcats with one goal and one assist apiece.
“Our players work hard every day in practice,” RC head coach Susan Nye said. “It’s nice to get some balance – and let all of the girls contribute.”
The Wildcats sprinted out of the gates, with Anna Nye winning the first eight draw controls – a streak that only ended when RC changed up its personnel in the draw circle – which led to an 8-0 advantage less than 10 minutes into the game. The ’Cats were ahead 10-0 by the end of the opening period and 15-0 at halftime, and they continued to spread the wealth around during a nine-goal second half.
The dominant performance featured the first career goals for defenders E.J. Clements and Schuyler Coleman, along with varsity newcomers Grace Jensen and Maeve McGrath.
“It’s an opportunity for us to let some kids who never have a chance on the offensive end” play attack, Coach Nye said. “It’s nice for those defenders to have that opportunity.”
Anna Nye finished the game with 10 draw controls for the Wildcats, who held a 21-5 advantage on the circle and outshot the Blue Demons 34-0. Ingram collected four draws, and Nadia Gaydos posted three.
Maddie Strausbaugh registered five saves in goal for Christiansburg, which was playing its season opener. Ari Akers tallied three draw controls for the Blue Demons.
RC’s home matchup with Albemarle, scheduled for last Wednesday, was canceled due to thunderstorms. The Wildcats are slated to return to action with road games at Patrick Henry and Franklin County next Monday and Wednesday, with both contests set for a 6 p.m. start.
