March 20, 2026 Editor, The News-Gazette: I have been undecided on my vote on April 21 concerning the referendum vote on redistricting in Virginia. But I recently saw a “stop the steal” sign opposing the change. Knowing that other state legislatures had made changes at the request of President Trump, I thought that two wrongs don’t make a right and that “we” should not favor the proposed temporary fix.
I now think it is important to counter the stealing done, at the behest of the president, by other states. The temporary nature of the proposed change, which mandates a return to the normal Virginia redistricting process done after the national census in 2030 - by an independent bipartisan commission, not the legislature - is meant to counter the gerrymandering done by other states If you want information on this issue, the Virginia Department of Elections has a website that explains the proposal.
