Building up a large lead early, the Rockbridge County High School girls lacrosse team improved to 2-0 by earning a 17-3 home win over The Covenant School on Thursday night in Lexington.
The Wildcats, who were coming off a 25-1 home victory over Fluvanna County in the season opener on Tuesday, made no doubt that they wanted the win on Thursday against one of only two teams to defeat them last year. When RC and Covenant met last March in Charlottesville, Covenant capitalized on RC yellow cards and eked out a 12-11 win. Covenant went on to win its fourth consecutive Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) Division II state championship last year.
On Thursday, the Wildcats got their offense moving from the start, taking a 7-1 lead after the first quarter. RC then built up a double-digit lead in the second quarter, taking a 12-1 advantage into halftime.
The Eagles (0-2) managed to score a pair of goals in the fourth quarter, but RC’s Emma McKnight scored the final goal of the game, as the Wildcats concluded a strong first week of the season.
Lola Mulitalo and Anna Nye led the Wildcats with five goals each. Ellie McKnight played the first half in goal for RC before Elle Werner replaced her for the second half.
The Wildcats will face an early test on Tuesday when they take on three-time defending state champion Western Albemarle in Crozet. The junior varsity game is schedule for 5:30 p.m., with the varsity game schedule to follow at 7. Last year, Western beat RC twice, winning 12-10 during the regular season last March before earning a 14-4 victory in the Class 4 state championship game in June.
