Flanagan Sixth In NCAAs
Washington and Lee University sophomore wrestler Liam Flanagan earned All-America honors by placing sixth at 157-pounds at the NCAA Division III Championships last weekend at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The top eight wrestlers in each weight class are named All-Americans.
With five grapplers competing, the Generals placed 31st of 68 teams, scoring 14 points. Wartburg won with 110 points, Wisconsin-La Crosse (68) placed second, and Augsburg (67.5) finished sixth. Rounding out the top five were New York University (65.5) and The College of New Jersey (58.5).
Flanagan started the twoday tournament by defeating Johnson & Wales wrestler Thomas DiResta in a 4-1 decision on Friday and then earning a 3-2 tiebreaker victory over Eric Kinkaid of Loras in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals on Saturday, Flanagan lost in an 8-0 major decision to Peter Kane of Williams. He then faced Wartburg’s Charlie Dojan in the consolation semifinals and fell in a 9-0 major decision. In the fifth-place match, Flanagan faced Kinkaid again and lost in a 3-2 decision.
The tournament capped an impressive season for Flanagan, who won both the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and Region IV titles.
Also competing for the Generals and seeing their tournament runs conclude on Saturday were seniors Vincent Ziccardi (133-pounds) and Evan Lindner (149), junior Skyler Hickman (141) and sophomore Carter Stack (285).
Under the direction of 14thyear head coach Nathan Shearer, W&L placed second in the ODAC tournament and fourth in the Region IV Championships.

All-American
Honors Bestowed
All four W&L athletes competing earned All-America honors at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships last weekend, while Southern Virginia University women Bayleigh Redd-Armstrong and Marin Simons both finished as Second Team All-Americans in Birmingham, Ala.
For the W&L women, senior Bailey Hedgemon was a First Team All-American, placing fifth in the weight throw with a program-record toss of 18.07 meters (58 feet, 2.5 inches). She became the first W&L women’s track and field athlete to earn All-America honors. Senior Jesma Evans earned Second Team honors by placing 11th in the 400meter dash in a program-record time of 56.24 seconds. Senior Camille Gillum also earned Second Team honors, tying for 14th place in the high jump, clearing 1.64 meters (5-4.5).
For the SVU women, Redd-Armstrong, a junior, placed 16th in the mile in 4:56.06. Simons, a freshman, tied for 14th place in the high jump, clearing 1.64 meters (5-4.5).
Freshman Macky Gartley, the lone W&L male competing, earned Second Team honors by finishing 12th in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.14 seconds.
Dana Freeman, in her 12th year, coaches the W&L women, while 13th-year head coach Brandon Uhl guides the men. Coaching the SVU women is Kyle Chandler, in his seventh year at the helm.
