Since 1995, members of the community have banded together to clean up roadways and dump sites throughout the county. That tradition continues this year when Rockbridge Conservation (formerly RACC), in partnership with Rockbridge County and the Virginia Department of Transportation, once again sponsors the Rockbridge Community Cleanup, starting this Saturday, March 21, and continuing through next Sunday, March 29.
Groups and individuals are encouraged to sign up online at the Rockbridge Conservation website, rockbridgeconservation. org, by clicking on the “Annual Community Clean Up” link. Bags and vests are available at Rockbridge Regional Library branches and the county recycling collection centers. Volunteers choose the roads or locations in the Rockbridge area that they wish to clean and can also choose alternate dates and times if needed.
Groups may wish to compete for the Litter Cup, fashioned by Mark Cline, which is awarded to the group collecting the most bags during the event. New for 2026, Walkabout Outfitters is sponsoring two competitions: one for the group that cleans up the longest stretch of road and another for the group with the youngest average age. Each winning group will receive up to eight gift certificates to Walkabout Outfitters.
If you know of any particular areas that should be targeted through the Rockbridge Community Cleanup, notify Jamie Goodin at (540) 463-2330 or send e-mail to cleanup@rockbridgeconser vation.org.
