Dissenting Justices Should ‘Rebuke’ Trump

Feb. 20, 2026 Editor, The News-Gazette: In response to the Supreme Court’s tariff decision, our president called the justices in the six-person majority “fools and lap dogs” for political opponents, adding, “They’re very unpatriotic and disloyal to our Constitution. It’s my opinion that the court has been swayed by foreign interests ...”

I am well beyond the point of exhaustion with the president for his constant display of ignorance concerning the constitution and the workings of government, not to mention his idiocy and just plain meanness. Instead, I turn my attention to the Court.

This ignorant rant by Trump must be addressed by the justices, particularly by those in the dissent. I fear that many in the country will unthinkingly accept Trump’s slanderous denunciation, foretelling an unthinkable result should the day come when Trump decides he no longer needs to listen to the Court.

While I doubt it would ever happen, I hope that Justices Kavanaugh, Alito and Thomas – the dissenters in the tariff decision – will publicly rebuke Trump for his outrageous comments, just as Chief Justice Roberts did less than a year ago after Trump called for the impeachment of a judge who ruled against him.
