The Rockbridge County School Board voted Tuesday night to amend the 2025-26 school calendar to make up instructional time lost to snow and ice-related closures.
Superintendent Phillip Thompson told the board the division has used nine of its 10 allotted “banked” weather days, leaving one remaining. An additional early dismissal last week also resulted in lost instructional hours.
To help recover time without affecting spring break or extending the school year past Memorial Day, the board approved two calendar changes:
Friday, Feb. 13, originally scheduled as a teacher workday, will now be a regular instructional day for students.
Thursday, Feb. 19, will no longer be a two-hour early dismissal and will instead be a full-length school day.
Thompson said the division hopes to avoid changes to spring break or extending the school year but noted that a teacher workday scheduled for March 13 could be revisited if additional weather closures occur. Another option, he said, would be to slightly extend daily instructional time if necessary.
The Board approved the changes unanimously.
