Trump Officials ‘Destroyed Any Trust Remaining’

Jan. 31, 2026 Editor, The News-Gazette: When our government lies to our faces, what are we supposed to do? F ederal agents fired 10 bullets into the back of a man they had already restrained and disarmed. That’s bad. Far worse were the false and malicious comments of our federal officials.

By its own premature, reckless, and inflammatory statements, the Trump administration has destroyed any trust remaining in its own veracity or in the integrity of its immigration enforcement operation. This is a terrible moment for law enforcement personnel who have worked honorably in our nation’s service and who know that accountability, especially from those at the top, is crucial to sustaining trust in their work.

Some people will complain that elected Minnesota officials are responsible for the mess by not cooperating with federal law enforcement. But state and local law enforcement are under state and local authority, not federal authority. Conservatives used to understand how important that is.

What are we supposed to do? I don’t know, but calling for the impeachment of Kristi Noem and J.D. Vance, and the firing of Stephen Miller, none of whom has bothered to correct their egregious slander and lies, seems like a good place to start. ANNE HANSEN Rockbridge Baths
