It’s ‘Patriotic To Call On Government To Do Better’

Jan. 19, 2026 Editor, The News-Gazette: I am writing in response to Jan Lowry’s letter last week that expressed her dismay at seeing protestors in Lexington who are upset with the behavior of ICE agents.

She can’t understand why we, the protestors, don’t support our federal law enforcement agents. I do support and respect our law enforcement officers who are respectful of our laws and the established law enforcement protocols.

ICE agents have been acting in ways that are not following protocols and even worse - in ways that are illegal. This is unacceptable in the United States. It is incumbent on citizens to voice disapproval and to call on the government to correct wrongs. It is indeed the patriotic thing to do - to stand on a cold and windy street corner and call on your government to do better.

Thank you to all of the concerned citizens who braved the cold weather to show up to demand better from their government. RENE HASEY Lexington
