‘Now Is The Time’ For Congressional Republicans ‘To Act’

Jan. 7, 2026 Editor, The News-Gazette: I believe that the United States is at a tipping point in Trump2.

On the one hand, we can have ample concern where three more years of Trump’s track record of chaos, cruelty, and corruption will take us.

On the other hand, we still have an intact states-operated voting system and a Congress.

Now is the time for Congressional Republicans to face their embarrassing position, largely as pawns and puppets of Trump. Do these senators and representatives want to continue, mute and helpless on important issues, afraid of Trump’s ire, paralyzed by fear of being “primaried”?

But how can they not be even more fearful of what three more years of Trump will bring to our Democracy? Recall that Trump arranged the January 6 riots in a coordinated far right effort to prevent Congressional voting, after his minions criminally failed to significantly alter states voting outcomes.

Now, with the unfettered power of all of the federal government in his hands, could Trump act to interfere with the midterm elections to his advantage? He has deployed thousands of National Guard soldiers to half a dozen cities for little apparent reason. Could these troops, now with practice and funding, serve a future Trump purpose of interfering with turnout or vote-counting in the midterm elections next November?

I believe Congress should impeach and convict Trump. There are ample grounds. His pardons and tariff negotiations for bribe money; his failure to remove any one of the incompetent and therefore dangerous RFK Jr., Hegseth, Noem, or Homan; his unexplained pandering obeisance to Putin and his failure to support Ukraine; his moves toward destruction of our alliances and distancing our human connections with Canada, Europe, and Mexico.

Now is the time to act. I ask Ben Cline to please think about it. FRED FEVRIER Walkers Creek
