Dec. 17, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: The Republican Party seem to be a bit on a roll these past 11 months but, a word of caution is in order during this Christian holy month.
Religion plays no real role in civil society. A civil society is about the structure and relationship between the citizen and his government. “Civil” is an operative word that is not appropriate in the context of any discourse on religion in society. The Founders weren’t kidding around when they positioned “Freedom of Religion” in the First Amendment. A thousand years of religious conflict, too often bloody among competing European interest groups, stands as a permanent warning that appeals to God or Gods or Dieties of one kind or another only result in the same bad outcomes as the practice of Marxism, (itself a “fellow traveler” of dieistic religions) is already producing, here in the 21st century.
The Republicans need to can the public praying spectacle that seems to be rearing its head, lately, and leave that “wall of separation between church and state” at least as strong as the fence they have successfully erected across our southern border. DON HENKE Goshen
