Nov. 15, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: Many folks have been unhappy with the removal of the large trees in Courthouse Square, but their replacement with space-appropriate specimens eventually will be welcomed, I’m sure.
The sculpturing of the area to include steps, however, will be detrimental in a number of ways: movement of infant carriages will be impaired; icy winter-time steps will be a hazard, and maintenance of the area will be a little more difficult. I wonder how long the planned-for pervious brickwork will remain porous, before becoming clogged with leaf/grass debris, city dirt and bird droppings.
The gentle slope of the area toward Main Street is very good as it is. Why level it with the addition of steps? Steps are hazards.
Locomotion, drainage, egress and maintenance all will be impaired, and leaving the topography about where it is will save a lot of money.
